Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is the flagship of the South African Biodiversity Institute. The gardens were established in 1913 to conserve and promote the indigenous flora of Southern Africa.Kirstenbosch is internationally acclaimed as one of the great botanical gardens of the world.Situated on eastern slopes of Table Mountain, the estate covers 528 hectares of cultivated garden and nature reserve. The Cape is classified as one of the six Floral Kingdoms of the globe (the smallest but richest in floral numbers) and Kirstenbosh boasts a huge variety of flowers, plants and trees from the Cape Floral Kingdom including our famous Protea Species.Guests to these gardens are free to explore the reserve themselves but guided tours are also available.During the summer the gardens play host to musical concerts on Sunday Afternoons.

Chapmans Peak Drive

Chapmans Peak Drive is definitely one of the most scenic coastal roads in South Africa. The road is part of the route we take when making our way down to Cape Point from Cape Town , overlooking the Hout Bay region and the local fishing village. There are numerous stop off points along the route where one can take in views and photograph the magnificent sea and mountain views. This road is approximately 15 km long. carved into the cliffs 250 meters above the sea.It was built using convict labour and completed in 1922 to join the towns of Hout Bay in the north and Noordhoek in the south.Over the years the road has undergone many upgrades and requires regular maintenance due to the brittle nature of the sedimentary sandstone that is cut into. One is often likely to see schools of dolphins, seals and Southern Right Whales (in season) in the bay below.

Hout Bay Harbour

Hout Bay Harbour is usually the first stop of the morning en route to Cape Point. Many tourists to the harbour will join one of the 40min boat trips to view a large colony of Cape Fur Seals on the island just off the coast. The harbour is responsible for supplying much of fish and Cape Lobster to many of Cape Town’s restaurants. The bay is a natural sheltered anchorage with a long white sandy beach and clear blue sea, perfect for water sports in the summer. The entire area is a colourful mix of fishing boats, private yachts and local people selling an array of African art and curios. The harbour market is the traditional type where you barter with the traders to achieve an agreeable price.

Fifteen minutes drive from the city center and waterfront is the exclusive residential area of Camps Bay.The beach here is one of the most beautiful (and most photographed) in the world. The long arch of white sand and calm cobalt waters are flanked by Lion’s Head mountain and the Twelve Apostles.Locals and tourists spend lazy days here soaking up the sun and then indulging at one of the many restaurants and cafes along the beachfront stretch. Many tourists will make Camps Bay their base when staying in Cape Town, making use of the upmarket Guest Houses and Villas overlooking the sea.

VICTORIA AND ALFRED WATERFRONT

Cape Town’s original Victorian harbour is one of the city’s main attractions. The entire region was completely restored in the early 1990′s and is now a lively and bustling district with many shops, restaurants and bars. The original Victorian buildings stand together with the more modern shopping centres and outdoor restaurants dotted along the quayside walkway. The more recently built section of the waterfront is situated next to the old clock tower and houses the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island. The Waterfront has become well known as an outdoor music venue with it’s own amphitheater, hosting live music during the now famous annual international Jazz Festival.

THE CAPE WINE ROUTE

You will remember the tranquility and scenic beauty of the Cape Wine Region long after you return home from your South African holiday. The Dutch started the wine industry here during the mid 1600′s, followed shortly after that by the French Huguenots bringing their unique culture and wine making experience to this part of the world and making the Cape the oldest of the new world wine producers. This region producers most of the French and European cultivars as well as the now famous South African hybrid cultivar- Pinotage. The areas of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek (French Corner) all have lush fertile valleys and spectacular mountain vistas. The local towns within the valleys are lined with magnificent Cape Dutch and Georgian influenced architecture with the real gems being the grand manor houses on the wine estates. Most of these estates and cellars are open to the public for viewing and wine tasting and also offer some of the finest South African cuisine.
