Mala Mala Safari

Mala Mala Safari

A mere hour’s flight from Johannesburg , Mala Mala was once the heart of the gold rush transport route on which fortune-seekers hauled their goods, often at tragic cost. If the mosquitoes didn’t get them, there were vultures, hyenas and lions that circled just beyond the flickering camp fire.

At a mammoth 13200 ha (33000 acres) , Mala Mala Game Reserve lies sandwiched between Sabi Sands and the Kruger National Park. Mala Mala shares 19 km of unfenced border with Kruger, providing unimpeded access to wildlife. Perhaps the strongest allure is the Sand River of which 13km flows through the reserve, attracting diverse wildlife. It is this habitat diversity conservation management that has contributed to Mala Mala’s reputation as the foremost game viewing destination in the world.

While it has become the exception rather than the norm for all the Big Five not to be seen on a single day – Mala Mala is so much more than a reserve with the coveted group of “ most dangerous animals” and with the formidable conservation expertise ensures that smaller creatures like the dung beatle have the right of way on the reserve roads ! Mala Mala is also a sanctuary for rare and endangered wildlife like cheetah, pangolins and the wild dog. The variety of birdlife here regularly rewards ornithologists with the martial eagle and the ground hornbill.

Activities range from walking safaris to off road safaris which may include bush breakfast, picnic lunches and the opportunity savour sun downers out in the African bush. To optimise the guests game viewing experience trackers from the Shangaan tribe work closely with the rangers. These Shangaan have a fabled understanding of the bush which is passed down from one generation to the next.

Mala Mala’s accommodation is discreet, classic with an elegant African opulence. The luxury camp, Rattray’s on Mala Mala, is a thoughtful reinvention of the traditional  “Into Africa” safari experience.
